What are Nursing Standards?
In Australia, nurses must meet the Nursing and Midwifery Board's (NMBA) professional standards in order to practice. Professional standards define the practice and behaviour of nurses and include codes of conduct, standards of practice, and codes of ethics. The Nursing and Midwifery Board, Australia, (NMBA) is responsible for the development and oversight of standards of nursing practice (www.nursingmidwiferyboard.gov.au).
Why are Nursing Standards important?
Nursing Standards (in conjunction with the codes of conduct) establish the requirements for the professional and safe practice of nurses.
How can this website help?
It provides user-friendly TOOLS* and RESOURCES that can assist student and graduate nurses in engaging with standards of practice; and supervising nurses (e.g. buddy RNs, preceptors, clinical facilitators, clinical educators) guide, appraise, and assess workplace performance in authentic situations and workplace settings of both STUDENTS (in a course of study for registration as either a registered or enrolled nurse) and GRADUATE registered and enrolled nurses in employment.
*Tools and resources are centered on the ANSAT - Australian Nursing Standards Assessment Tool (ANSAT) developed based on the NMBA standards of practice.
